So, we’re here with some tips to help you live a greener life. The number of ways you can go green and help the world around you is so plentiful; it’s just a matter of realizing it and taking action.
The easiest of ways:

B.Y.O.B. – Every time you go to the grocery store, you likely use plastic bags. Put your best foot forward and bring your own reusable bags to the grocery store. Not only is this better for the environment, but these bags are sturdier, meaning no more ripped bags. A lot of stores now give a bag refund of a few cents per bag you bring which means, being green saves you some green.

Recycle, Recycle, Recycle – It’s always a good idea to familiarize yourself with what you can recycle in your town. While most of the items are the same, some towns have slight variations on the items that can be recycled.

Take the Stairs – By taking the stairs, both you and the environment get a benefit. Burn calories by taking the stairs while you preserve electricity.
Coffee drinker? You and me both :) If you buy your coffee on the go, buy a reusable mug that you like. Disposable cups are made of a material that isn't biodegradable, meaning they just sit in a land fill. PLUS, many coffee shops often offer a discount for bringing your own reusable mug.

Grounds For a Second Life - Coffee grounds can have other uses besides just being coffee. You can compost them, use them to scrub grease off pots and pans, or use them to absorb odors in your refrigerator.

Carpool or Take Public Transportation – Think about all the money you’ll save by not driving your car all the time, and at the same time, you are reducing your carbon footprint. Consider carpooling with coworkers, or check out the local bus route to see if you can swap your car for public transportation.

Start a Compost Bin – Cut down on the amount you throw out by composting materials like food waste. The benefits are plentiful! Compost works great as a fertilizer, and it helps the soil become healthier. Why should you care? Healthy soil is key for protecting our water supply.

Good news! You have quite a few choices when you are trying to make a decision about a new air conditioner and heating system. Here are a number of common types:

Split system - This system means that there are parts of your system both inside and outside. These typically include a furnace, an evaporator coil, air conditioner (which works with the evaporator coil), ducts (you want to carry the air through your house), thermostat, and other optional accessories.

Hybrid Heat split system – This system is a smarter, more energy efficient twist on the type of system above. This system uses an electricity-fueled heat pump to provide heat (along with a furnace, ducts, evaporator coil, thermostat, and other optional accessories). Even better? The heat pump works in place of an air conditioner as well!

Packaged systems – With a packaged system, it is basically an all in one deal. Many of these look very similar, but they can serve a number of different functions.

Ductless split system – Ducts spread air through your house – so this system does this without ducts. Basically, this type of system would be for an area of the house like a room addition or areas that do not have duct work.

Geothermal Heat Pump System – This type of system doesn't rely on the air outside. Instead, it taps into the temperatures of the earth to heat and cool your home.

As you can see, you have lots of options to consider. Find the one that works best for you and your home.

Installing an air conditioner is an investment, so make sure you are thinking about a variety of aspects when picking out your new system. This helps to ensure you are pleased with the outcome and are happy with your new system.

1) Make sure whoever is installing your air conditioner is experienced and has all the qualifications needed to do the installation.

2) Be sure you are getting a unit that is right for you AND your house. You don’t want to get a unit too big or too small, or it will not be worth it for you.

3) Have the HVAC specialist lay out the entire plan – what the total cost is and a breakdown of the cost. Be sure to also have him/her inform you about any warranties that accompany your product and what the payment plan is for any models you are considering.

4) Review the efficiency of the air conditioner you are considering. You want to make sure that the product you have is going to be right for you. More efficient air conditioners typically will cost a little more up front, but you typically end up saving more in the long run on your energy bills.

If you need help in your search, GHAC is a helpful place to start your search. Visit our website for more information. We are a Carrier dealer, and they offer a wide variety - check out your options online.Ericahttp://www.blogger.com/profile/09702562351328503338noreply@blogger.com0tag:blogger.com,1999:blog-4640712568142185413.post-7308203125670500032015-03-11T07:55:00.000-07:002015-03-19T06:15:57.815-07:00Energy Efficiency 101: VocabularyLet us decode a few words related to energy efficiency and explain how using these terms can help you get the system that matches you and your home, whether you are considering a new air conditioner or furnace.

First things first: We’ve noticed one trend across the board with these terms. The higher the number, the higher the efficiency. This typically will result in a larger energy savings for you, ultimately reducing cost.

AFUE Rating – This stands for the Annual Fuel Utilization Efficiency Rating. Why is this important? This tells you how efficient your furnace is, meaning how much fuel your furnace actually uses versus what percentage is wasted. This is helpful to know as the higher the number, the more money you are likely saving.

COP – This one means the Coefficient of Performance, and is used to measure your heat pump’s efficiency when it is in heating mode. Geothermal products tend to have this type of rating associated with them.

EER – Energy Efficiency Ratings are a source of interest for those with geothermal systems, air conditioners, or air source heat pumps. It measures cooling efficiency.

HSPF – This term deals with the efficiency of heat pumps while in heating mode. You want a high number, like with all of these figures. The industry required minimum for the Heating Seasonal Performance Factor presently is a 7.7

SEER – Defined as the measure of how the cooling process of air conditioners and heat pumps are rated, the Seasonal Energy Efficiency Ratio is another number that can help you be more efficient with your energy and help you save more money.

Do you have questions about air quality? We have answers!

Indoor air quality is one of the Environmental Protect Agency’s top 5 environmental health concerns. It’s not fun to hear, but the EPA states that the air inside your home is anywhere from 2 to 5 times dirtier than air outside (source). Scary, right?

However, don’t be afraid! There are plenty of air-quality solutions that exist today, such as humidifiers or purifiers. Using one of these can eliminate pollutants and get rid of pesky nuisances like bacteria, dust mites, mold, and mildew. Good indoor air quality is controlled by humidity and temperature.

The EPA has many resources for you to use regarding this topic. This guide provides information about mold in your home, and they also have an entire area of their site dedicated to indoor air quality in homes. Take a virtual tour of a house that the EPA has available online to help you learn about indoor air quality.Ericahttp://www.blogger.com/profile/09702562351328503338noreply@blogger.com0tag:blogger.com,1999:blog-4640712568142185413.post-31627032720518612872015-01-22T07:59:00.001-08:002015-03-10T11:35:37.177-07:00Preventative Maintenance . . . It's Important! You may ask yourself, "Why should I keep up on preventative maintenance for my air conditioning or heating system?" Well, I can tell you, there are plenty of good reasons for this!

1. It’s a good investment. Think of preventative maintenance in terms of the metaphor of say, a car. If you keep up on your maintenance by getting regular oil changes and checking your brakes, etc., your car will most likely work longer, and look nicer. It will also be a better investment in the long haul, when it comes to resale of said car (or home).

2. Catch problems before they become bigger problems. This goes along with the above – by keeping up on preventative maintenance, you will be catching problems before they become big problems. Therefore, you are likely saving yourself stress and money.

3. Preventative maintenance can help your system run more efficiently since during a maintenance visit, HVAC professionals will check the following as needed:

A more efficient system means you are likely saving money.

4. You fix the issues on your schedule. With preventative maintenance, you not only will likely have fewer repairs, but you also are able to schedule the preventative maintenance on your schedule. This is convenient as products seem to break at the most inconvenient times possible; this way, you are setting the schedule.

This first one is called "Noises" and is a slightly humorous take on the noises a furnace can make.
“thermal boundary”? You may ask. A thermal boundary is simply a home’s
exterior, which is comprised of outer walls, the ceiling, floor, and windows.
You can save more than $200 a year, or up to 10% on total annual energy bills
with the proper insulation. A knowledgeable homeowner or skilled professional
can get this job done right. If you decide to hire a contractor, make sure the
professional uses specialized tools to identify and seal hidden air leaks
before insulating.
everyone! Over the course of the next few weeks, we will provide energy saving
tips on the following topics: windows, thermal boundaries, air registers, and
vent fans, in order to make your home feel comfortable while reducing your
energy bills at the same time. Today, we will discuss how to save energy,
starting with your windows.
<span style="font-family: "Arial","sans-serif";">Make sure to
caulk and weather-strip areas around doors and windows to prevent air from
escaping. This is a great preparation for the upcoming fall and winter season.
You’ll also want to consider replacing window screens with storm windows, which
act as an extra defense against chilly air.

<span style="font-family: "Arial","sans-serif";">Did you know?

sweater to stay comfortable…during the summer? Stifling temperatures should not
result in turning your office into a thermostat-created igloo. Let’s learn how
to keep your building at the perfect temperature so that your sweater can stay
tucked away until next season – besides, when was the last time a winter
wardrobe made its way into your summer wardrobe?

<span style="font-family: "Arial","sans-serif";">Luckily, there are solutions
to resolve this ongoing workplace issue.

<span style="font-family: "Arial","sans-serif";">Solution one: install more thermostats throughout the building. This allows colleagues to have more control over the temperature near their designated work space. Although this comes with a hefty price tag, workers pay the price in discomfort and decreased productivity in the meantime.

<span style="font-family: "Arial","sans-serif";">Solution two: location, location, location! Did you know? Air coming out of a vent is
10 to 15 degrees colder than room temperature? If your desk is next to an
air conditioning vent, you may unfortunately bear the chilly consequences. Try
rearranging the location of your desk to stay clear of the AC breeze.

<span style="font-family: "Arial","sans-serif"; font-size: small;">Solution three: have access to a window? Open it up! To offset the arctic conditions, open a window to allow
for natural, fresh air ventilation.

<span style="font-family: "Arial","sans-serif"; font-size: small;">By following
these simple steps, your workplace will feel more comfortable no matter what
part of the building, or the time of year. No need to snuggle up in a sweater
during the workday anymore!
it comes to season changes, General Heating and Air Conditioning
ensures both you and your home will feel comfortable year round. What
can you do to feel cool and refreshed in the hot summer sun?

Let’s start with simple cooling tips, and your own body. First, wear clothes that allow for good breathability, such as cotton, hemp, and linen. Second, pick lighter foods, such as salads and sandwiches as opposed to oven, stove-top, or grilled foods, which can warm your body temperature. Third, stay hydrated! Drink lots of water or an electrolyte beverage such as Gatorade in order to prevent dehydration, especially during outdoor activities. Speaking of water, cool showers can help prevent your body from going into heat exhaustion. Lastly, when your home feels warm, typically the basement will feel much cooler. Apart from your air conditioning and cooling system, other simple solutions will keep your home feeling crisp and cool.

When not at home, make sure to close all your windows and draw your blinds to keep the sun from streaming in and heating your home. Remember: south-facing windows get a lot of sun, east-facing windows see the sunlight in the morning, and west-facing windows receive the majority of a day’s worth of sun.

Incandescent light bulbs generate heat. Try switching your bulbs to energy-efficient, compact fluorescent light bulbs, or halogen infrared light bulbs.
Enjoy the summer heat, don’t sweat it!

More information on summer cooling tips can be found at http://www.webmd.com/Unknownnoreply@blogger.com0tag:blogger.com,1999:blog-4640712568142185413.post-23397585152484559342014-05-07T07:13:00.002-07:002014-05-07T07:13:39.443-07:00GHAC TVWelcome to the General Heating and Air Conditioning blog!
